In an unprecedented attempt, 57 year old Google VP Alan Eustace has shattered Felix Baumgatner’s 2012 ‘space jump’ record.
I’m sure we all remember Felix Baumgartner’s recored breaking jump in 2012. Not only did he set the record for the highest freefall and be the first to break the sound barrier in free fall, but it created a media frenzy shattering previous online streaming records, with a 8 million viewer count.
Using a Helium balloon, Eustace’s 2 hour accent took him 135,908 feet off the ground. This is 8,056 feet higher than Baumgartner’s 127,852 foot jump. Eustace’s 15 minute jump took him 15 minutes, and reports indicated the was an audible sonic boom.
After turning down Google’s offer to help in his free fall attempt, Eustace embarked on a 3 year pet project designing his flight suit and jump plans without financial accompaniment.
Who knows if Allan we will proclaimed as national hero, as Baumgartner was, but we can all agree, he is pretty damn humble.
There is a short teaser video the Times has compiled, I am sure the full GoPro video will be released in the coming weeks.
Redbull, take note of the humility.
