Vibram sued by Olympic Marathon winner’s family

Vibram, the maker of the 5 finger shoes, is being sued by the family of Abebe Bikila, the 1960 Rome Olympic Marathon winner.

Vibram created a line of shoe called the ‘Bikila’ which they trademarked in 2010. There have been at least 6 shoes made under that name. I guess no one asked his son, Teferi Bikila. Teferi filed the lawsuit on Monday.

Abebe Bikila, a late entrant to the Ethiopian marathon squad, decided to run the marathon barefoot (the way he had been training) because the provided shoes gave him blisters. Bikila shattered the Olympic record, finishing in 2 hours and 15 minutes.

In 1969, Bikila was in a car crash that left him paralyzed. As a result, he died 1973.

The family is seeking $15 million dollars in punitive damages for unjust enrichment.
